If you are in Nelson on Saturday, we definately recommend spending time at Nelson's Saturday Market. It reminds us of the country markets in the south of France and is always fun to wander around listening to the musicians, sampling the flavors of the local purveyors and just enjoying the ambience of a glorious day in Nelson.
Nelson, Golden Bay, and Abel Tasman
Situated in the centre of New Zealand, Nelson
enjoys more sunshine hours than any other area in New Zealand. The Nelson
scenery is magnificent with its rivers, sandy beaches, and sheltered bays.
The changing seasons provide the Nelson tourist with magnificent views
at any time of year.
The relaxed holiday atmosphere, proximity to the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi
National Parks, and the lovely sandy beaches of Tasman Bay and Golden
Bay are just a few of the reasons why Nelson is such a popular holiday
destination.
National Parks
Nelson has three vastly different national parks - all within ninety
minutes drive of the city. New Zealand’s favourite is the Abel Tasman
National Park, with its renowned coastal tracks, remote golden beaches,
the leafy shade of tracks skirting calm inlets, safe water for kayaking,
swimming with seals, or luxury lodge accommodation in the heart of the
park.
The more rugged Nelson Lakes National Park has lakeside tracks and trails
winding upwards through beech forests to the serenity of alpine meadows.
Try skiing in winter, boating in summer and the village experience of
St Arnaud for a range of food and accommodation.
Then there’s over 400,000 hectares of wilderness recently created,
designated as the Kahurangi National Park. Lofty birches, soft ferns and
mosses, vivid blooms of Rata, Nikau Palms against the wild sea - the native
forest sweeps from mountains to the coast, accessible on a range of tracks
including the Heaphy, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks.
The Boulder Bank
The Boulder Bank is a natural spit made up of boulders, cobbles and pebbles.
It separates Nelson Haven and Harbour from Tasman Bay. More...
